For her birthday, Johnna David didn’t want dinner or a trip. Instead, she asked her husband for an electric saw.
The upgrade was needed for Seasons Boutique, her year-round holiday workshop, a family-and-friend operation that has grown from two sisters to eight craftswomen. For the last 15 years, shoppers have made the holiday pilgrimage to Pleasant Hill for their annual boutique.
“Sometimes we have a waiting line out the door,” David says – little wonder, with about 650 people making their way to the weekend sale in David’s family home.
David and her sister became inspired by shopping at other boutiques. “Everything we saw, we said, ‘I can make that, I can make that.’ Before we knew it, we were making our own craft items.” They’ve included elaborate wreaths, decorated trees and embroidered ornaments. Wood items, such as painted candlesticks and trays, are David’s specialty and popular sellers. She’s working on birdhouse lamps this year. “You can’t really find original painted (wood) items. It’s all mass-produced,” she says of the demand.
The crafters meet twice a month to come up with projects and evaluate one another’s work. Two of David’s 10 siblings work as elves, but they rejected a third sister from Long Beach who one year made napkins and tablecloths out of vintage handkerchiefs that didn’t sell. “We just all laugh at her,” David says cheerily.
Now David has moved, so the 16th annual sale is at her sister Andrea’s Danville living room. The production line now includes a male: her 15-year-old son Joey, who makes rhinestone-studded swords. “We’ve got everyone working,” she says.
A guide to Seasons Boutique and other craft fairs follow. Events, organized by weekend dates and then city, are free unless otherwise indicated. Please note: Some events run multiple weekends.

We always did it in Pleasant Hill, I have a mailing list of about 800 people. We work all year long on this. And there are eight of us.
We started off as two, me and the sister in Clayton, Kim Bernal. My daughter. Lindsay Hopkins (Antioch), came into it. and Harla Smith and her daughter Harla Jody, martinez. Dee Heisch of Pleasant Hill. Helen Riley of Oakley. Andrea Mauldin’s home in Danville, Jordan who is 11.
We used to go to boutiques and everything we saw, I can make that, I can make that. Before we knew it, we were making our own craft items. One year for my birthday, I asked my husband for an electric saw. Bird house lamps
My dining room table and my kitchen table, and we put it out in the Living room. $225 total. Last year we start on Thursday nights (preview party). everything we make is all lit up.
I would say about 650 people all total last year. Sometimes we have a waiting line out the door. We’ve always served hot cider and we’ve always had chocolate chip cookies.
It was disruptive to my family, father and son. Relegated upstairs all weekend long. I subscribe to this little book called “Let’s Go Boutiquing.” We just wanted to keep the homey atmosphere. People know my house. Moved into an apartment.
A lot of wood items, soft things as in one of the girls make Santas and Snowmen out of fleece material or chenille snowmen. We have floral sprays, cooking and breads.
Because a lot of the people who come to the boutique always say
prices are wonderful. completely decorated six foot trees $28, my sister wreaths $32 (stores $100s). Elaborate ribbons, fresh berries. Again I cut my own wood, I know that a $12 cut of wood is going to get me a lot of little items. A lot of the wooden items are popular. Wooden candlesticks made out of stair turnings. Trays. painted items. You can’t really find original painted items, it’s all mass-produced. All of us took a tole painting class (decorative painting). We have a different variety, not just Christmas themes. Harvest goods.
(Stamina) We’re all related, so that’s way. I have two sisters that are in it, my daughter, my friend Harla I’ve known her for 20 years. Helen works with my sister. (11 of us) When I started doing that, one sister got into it, before you know I can do that too. rejected her own sister from Long Beach (talented) it didn’t sell. Vintage handkerchiefs and she made these into napkins and table cloths. Work she put into them, too expensive. We just all laugh at her.
We do have fun, and after the boutique is over, we all go out to dinner (on the proceeds). We pay $100 a year in dues. We have $700 to work with for supplies, ads, mailings, stamps, flyers, cider, cookies, something left over and we go out to dinner. Start in January, what sold, what didn’t sell, who’s going to do what.
We try to meet twice a month, we either do it here (at her place) or in Martinez. We have taken people in. Waiting list. It’s a lot of time. The month of October until right before Thanksgiving, my house is turned upside down. We get along great, my sister Kim, we sell all year long out at the Danville Arts& Crafts store on Railroad Avenue. Jordan is doing rose wands–balloon stick, silk roses, streams of ribbon. they sold out so quickly last year.
My son Joey, 15, who makes wooden swords studded with rhinestones and he base coats. “We’ve got everyone working.”

[VHC63][VHC63]Holiday Craft Fairs
Math come into play during the holidays. There is the list, with its subset of recipients who range from deserving mind-blowing gifts to obligatory acknowledgment. Then when the Christmas Club account matures, the money is divided up in a complex formula involving the aforementioned variables. All this, and the gift-giver hasn’t even begun computing the shopping miles, calculating how to avoid the terrorist perfume spritzers in the cosmetic section, figuring how many times you’ve seen that mass-produced item and measuring your energy expended.
Whilst such problem-solving might be glamorous or passionate to the numerically inclined, some of us just want to reduce everything to the simplest equation. A little geometry may come into order this Yuletide season: the straight line between the craftsman or artisan, the buyer and the delighted recipient. Clip out this guide to craft fairs, open studios and boutiques and just count the smiles divided by the joy of creation. It should equal up to one happy shopper.
All craft fairs, organized by weekend dates and then city, are free unless otherwise noted.
